The national economy of the region is in many things shaped by the geographical situation and demand of the region in agricultural produce.

The region specializes in the production of milk, meat, grain, potatoes and vegetables. There is a hothouse in the Rudakovo company, beef producing facility at the Lipovtsy company and pork producing facility at the Luchesa company.

The regional agricultural industry features three close joint stock companies, two open joint stock companies, seven municipal unitary agricultural companies, two republican unitary agricultural companies, six agricultural producers' co-operatives, 47 farms, four agricultural branches of the industrial companies. The open joint stock company Vitebsk Raiagroservice provides agricultural industry maintenance services.

The farm lands occupy 81.5 thousand hectares in the region, including arable lands – 45.2 thousand hectares.

The Vitebsk region takes one of the leading positions among other regions of the Vitebsk oblast in term of agricultural production.

A dairy complex at the Olgovskoye agricultural company has been built following a Czech technology. Dairy facilities at Tulovo, Vozrozhdenie, Rudakovo agricultural companies are currently reconstructed following the Germany technology.

The agricultural production has been on the rise in the region for the past few years.
